Sandra Anderson Schuh, Ph.D.

I received my Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Miami in 1986.  My doctoral dissertation, with a focus on Applied Ethics, was entitled Astroethics: An Instrumentalist Examination of Space Ethics.  In my dissertation I examined   economic justice, space pollution, space sovereignty, distributive justice with regard to medical research and numerous other potential ethical dilemmas. The new frontier gave rise to new ethical issues and approaches.

I began my teaching career with an Assistantship in Philosophy in Graduate School at the University of Miami.  While there I taught classes in Introductory Philosophy, Contemporary Moral Issues and Logic. After graduation I taught as an Adjunct Professor of Philosophy and Humanities at Florida International University and Miami Dade Community College. I accepted a position in Philosophy at The University of Tampa in 1989. While at the University of Tampa I also taught at the University of South Florida in the Department of Interdisciplinary Social Science as a Visiting Professor. During my tenure at the University of Tampa and The University of South Florida I presented a series of opening lectures on Medical Ethics to first year medical students at the University of South Florida Medical School. This was in association with Tampa General Hospital and their Ethics Committee of which I was a member. In 1999 I returned to Miami to become Director of the Environmental Ethics Institute at Miami Dade Community College  the largest Community College in the United States. Currently I am President of the small consulting firm of Stutz, Schuh and Associates and reside part time in Washington D.C.

Most of my publications have been in the area of Applied Ethics.  And I have presented numerous juried papers at Conferences in Medical Ethics, Engineering Ethics, Environmental Ethics and Philosophy.  I have worked with the Miami Chamber of Commerce by putting together programs in Ethics Education for Dade County Public Schools and helped write and participate in Community T.V. programs entitled Ethics Soup.

I have served on many committees including Honors Committees, Hospital Ethics Committees and as Chair of the Institutional Review Board at the University level.  I was President of The Florida Philosophical Association, a Florida Residential Scholar for the Florida Humanities Council, listed in Who's Who Among American Teachers, Who's Who in Engineering (as an Ethics Educator) and I am a Fulbright Scholar.

I have recently served as the Director, Ethics and Community Relations for Sabre Technical Services, LLC.
